Rosa from Newsy.com was kind enough to direct me to a video on their site offering some insight from the recent news about the Marvel Comics and Disney “merger” (or takeover, as would be more appropriate). They posted a great video looking at different media angles as well as fan opinions, and I’ve embedded it below:
Time will tell what this ultimately means for both companies, as well as their licensors (like Hasbro), but you can be sure there will be some sorts of changes coming down the pipe. You can find the original video on their site here.
The key thing I’ve been focusing on is that Marvel maintains the rights to sell a movie they want to do to another company if Disney passes on it.
This is very important. I was worried Disney would have full control of what will make it to the theater and what won’t.
I think this is the same for TV stuff.
That video really seems to be saying “Marvel fans think it may be a bad idea, but no…look at how much this will benefit Disney.” I am sure no Marvel fan is arguing that the acquisition is bad for Disney. They are more worried about what it means for Marvel.
Personally, I am more worried about what it means for Hasbro.
As long as this merger brings creative people and properties together I don’t see a problem. However, given the Mattel and Disney have such a strong relationship, I hope that Mattel never gets their hands into the Marvel library. If Disney leaves the Hasbro and Marvel relationship in the toy realm alone, and Mattel never touches it, then it should be all fine and dandy.
The one great thing that could come from this merger is an animated Marvel universe on par with the DC animated universe of old. If Disney can produce some top-rate Marvel cartoons, then I’ll be happy.
Given the track record I think you can pretty much bet on the opposite of whatever Fox, The Wallstreet journal (opinion page! The rporting side of the house is quite good.) and CNBC predict.
