GeneralsJoes Reviews the 2014 Convention Set “Zombie Initiative”

First and foremost, a HUGE thanks to long time Joe friend and fellow website admin Fred from JoeBattleLines.  For folks who don’t follow me on Twitter, you may not know this, but during my trip to JoeCon, my beloved Fuji digital camera got destroyed in transit.  That’s one of the reasons why my pictures from JoeCon were all of the less-than-optimal smart phone variety.  So, fresh off an expensive JoeCon trip, I was faced with the distinct possibility of replacing my camera.

Well, Fred heard my dilemma and without hesitation, sent a loaner in the mail to me at his own expense.  It was that camera that I used to take all of the pictures for these reviews, so make sure you thank Fred for his quick generosity.  It’s quite possible these reviews may not have happened nearly as quickly without his help.  While you’re at it, check out JoeBattleLines.com or on Facebook or Twitter to see his Joe reviews and general geekery.

Now, on to the review talk..

The questions generally start coming in about a day or two after I return from the Convention…  “when are you going to post the Convention Set reviews?!”

In previous years I had sort of combined all of the individual pieces into one review, but it was getting arduous and lengthy, and I felt like each individual part of the set was not getting its due scrutiny.  So starting last year I broke everything out into individual reviews, all linked to one central “Set Review”.  Is the format perfect?  Nope, probably not.  And really, in my opinion, there’s no way to slam out 20 reviews in 2 weeks time without some of it sounding repetitive.  Hopefully I do these toys justice, because there are some fantastic ones in here.

You can hit up the G.I. Joe Collectors Club Review page, or just click the link below for this monster.  This will hopefully be a good way to kill a couple of hours on a busy Monday.

Marauder Task Force reveals “Security-Ops” Paint Master

We’re within four days of the end of the landmark Marauder Task Force Kickstarter, and on the cusp of the $135,000 “Guerrero” stretch goal which will unlock a very cool looking Security-Ops version of the Task Force soldier.  For obvious reasons I’d think this figure will be in hot demand for G.I. Joe fans.

Check out the new paint master below, and let’s keep up the momentum!  We need a little less than $10,000 in four days to get the Security Ops trooper unlocked.  We can do this!

G.I. Joe: Battleground Event “Snakes in the Sea Grass” is now live!

Throughout the lifecycle of the G.I. Joe: Battleground collectible game, they’ve pulled many storylines from the Sunbow era, and they are doing it again this time around.  Using the events of arguably the highlight of the Sunbow series, “The Traitor”, the next Battleground event is live, and looks like a whole lot of fun.

After many costly defeats at the hands of the Joes, the Crimson Twins approach a worry-stricken Joe hero with a proposition he can’t refuse. This slippery slope culminates in G.I.JOE being lured to a deep-sea platform with an explosive surprise! The Joe leadership is dealt a terrible blow, but things go from bad to worse as Cobra launches an all-out attack to free their newest, most promising, most traitorous lieutenant! Can the fight for freedom survive the Snake in the Sea Grass? Find out in this week’s exciting Capture event, starting today!

Check out the screen caps below.  I am loving the Crimson Twins, and really dig how they used the PoC Dusty to be a Cobra version of the character.  Pretty sweet.

Potential Kindle Worlds submitters… don’t spend big time or big cash on your book cover

…because as of right now, you can’t use it, at least for G.I. Joe.

I submitted my entry to the G.I. Joe Kindle Worlds section earlier this week, and after enlisting the generous aid of a fellow G.I. Joe fan and graphic designer (thanks, Brian!) to create a cover for my Price of Peace novel, I was quite dismayed to see that it wouldn’t let me upload my own image for the book cover.

I reached out to Kindle Worlds support, and was told that Hasbro has only provided them the copyright access for some pre-designed covers that they have supplied for use for Kindle Worlds submitters.  The pre-designed covers contain mostly package art for various vehicles and characters, but unfortunately are pretty uninspired.

I was extremely impressed with the cover design that I received from Brian of Emagine, and equally unimpressed that the Kindle Worlds system for G.I. Joe did not allow its use.  Thanks, Hasbro!  🙂

It didn’t stop me from submitting the novel (which is currently under review) but for folks who are considering the same, don’t spend hours (or dollars) designing a cover, as of right now, it will be time and money wasted.

GeneralsJoes reviews G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #201

The landmark 200th issue of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero was the big story what seems like just a few weeks ago, so I was surprised to see the next issue already slated for release this past Wednesday.  I was quite pleasantly surprised, I should say, simply because while I enjoyed issue #200, I didn’t feel like it presented an impactful closure to the current story, and I was hoping to see how things continued to evolve.

As it turns out, issue #201 seems like more of a set up issue, but it’s still a quite enjoyable one.  Check out the full review after the jump.
