Regular Joes Podcast Episode #39 – G.I. Joe hits 50 and 50 hits back

As excited as many Real American Hero fans were about some of the announcements at Toy Fair a short while ago, there is a segment of the community that felt a little bit left out.  So when three representatives from that community invited me onto their podcast to chat about Toy Fair reveals, I jumped at the chance, eager to see their perspective.  It certainly helps that Barry, Tod, and Dave are all great guys who are really closely invested in the G.I. Joe fandom and do regular work for the G.I. Joe Collectors Club!

Well, I couldn’t have had a better time.  All three of them are veritable geek experts (as listeners of their podcast can certainly attest to) and we talked about everything from G.I. Joe’s 50th Anniversary to Guardians of the Galaxy, Harold Ramis, and many other things in between.  It was a blast.

And folks looking for information about my dio-story may want to listen to… I break a bit of news on that front as well.  🙂

Heck, we even talk a little bit about the Adventure Team Chronicles and “Shattered Glass” concept, considering podcast host Tod Pleasant is the writer of that particular adventure.

You can find the latest episode over on iTunes, and the show notes are below.

SHOW NOTES

In 1964 Hasbro introduced G.I. Joe, America’s Movable Fighting Man, and the Action Figure was born. As fans of G.I. Joe gear up to recognize their plastic hero’s golden anniversary, controversy, Joe’s frequent companion, one again makes an appearance. Is Hasbro giving Joe his due? Barry, Dave and Tod, the Regular Joes are joined by Justin Bell from the What’s on Joe Mind podcast to talk it out. Also, a salute to the late great Harold Ramis, with movie picks, and another round of Who Would Win in a Fight. Yo Joe!

G.I. Joe Collectors Club reveals 2014 Convention Exclusive DAWG

My first reaction?  Ewww…  but I think that’s probably supposed to be the first reaction.  Ever since Resident Evil thrilled video gamers with the cut scene of zombie dogs hurling themselves through windows, the idea of these brain-eating beasts has floated around through many different properties.

Now the G.I. Joe Collectors Club is doing their own version of a zombie dog, going the pit bull route.  Obviously infused with some kind of Compound Z formula, DAWG has seen some better days.  What I find most interesting about this reveal is that the identify Repulsor as a “director of security for Cobra Industries”…

The last time we heard about Cobra Industries was G.I. Joe: Renegades…  and I gotta admit, I get an ear-to-ear grin just thinking about that series.  It does make me a bit more interested to see just what Repulsor might end up being.  There have been rumors that he’s a variation of a Sludge Viper (early concepts for Sludge Viper indeed identified him as “Repulsor”) but I will admit, I have no idea what to expect here.  He’s the last reveal, and hopefully we’ll be seeing him this week.  Meanwhile, hit up GIJoeCon.com for the full details, and DAWG can also be seen below.

What’s on Joe Mind Interviews Larry Hama & Mark Cheng

I’m sure folks have seen me talk about Ghost Source Zero several times over the past couple of weeks, and a short while ago, myself and the guys from What’s on Joe Mind spent about an hour with both Larry Hama and Mark Cheng talking about this excellent looking series.

The conversation obviously involves discussions about the Kickstarter Campaign, but also dives into Larry Hama’s thought process, and some very interesting insight into his opinions on the current state of theater and television entertainment.  He’s refreshingly open and engaging, and this is the only place you will ever hear him say the words “throbbing sphincter”.  Hey, we’re not the #1 G.I. Joe podcast for nothing.

The “hood” is lifted and the 2014 G.I. Joe Convention Clean Sweep is revealed!

Just a few moments ago, the G.I. Joe Con Twitter account mentioned checking “under the hood” and now, they have!

Although I was hoping for perhaps a Repulsor reveal today, instead we get our first look at Clean Sweep’s face underneath the chem hood!

Check out GIJoeCon.com, and I’ve also mirrored the image below.

G.I. Joe Collectors Club reveals full 12″ Boxed Set for 2014 JoeCon

…And it’s pretty flipping awesome.

For any fans who have been complaining about Hasbro leaving the 12″ fan in the dust when designing the 50th Anniversary product, you cannot accuse the Collectors’ Club of the same thing.  They’ve designed a really nice 50th Anniversary homage to the original Green Beret, and included a great Adventure Team figure in the set to boot.  Some really nice gear, and of course, that pesky 4″ Joe Colton in there stirring up trouble.

Check out all the details of the 12″ Convention Set right here, and I’ve mirrored an image below.  Now, fingers crossed we get a peek at Repulsor and DAWG today to help round off the Real American Hero set!
