The landmark 200th issue of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero was the big story what seems like just a few weeks ago, so I was surprised to see the next issue already slated for release this past Wednesday. I was quite pleasantly surprised, I should say, simply because while I enjoyed issue #200, I didn’t feel like it presented an impactful closure to the current story, and I was hoping to see how things continued to evolve.
As it turns out, issue #201 seems like more of a set up issue, but it’s still a quite enjoyable one. Check out the full review after the jump.

Well, sort of. IDW Publishing held their panel at WonderCon today, and in attendance were John Barber and Carlos Guzman, who both have pitched in with editing duties for various G.I. Joe titles over the past few years.
Comic Book Resources was in attendance and there was quite a bit said about the upcoming Transformers and G.I. Joe title by Barber and Tom Scioli, mentioning the Free Comic Book Day issue hitting May 3rd. They also reiterated that G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero will continue as normal.
The “big news” was that the main IDW continuity will pick up in September. We’ve already seen a teaser image and heard the tagline “Fall of G.I. Joe”, so it sounds like this should hit us in September, so keep an eye out for those solicitations.

As usual, by examining the comic book/program that came with the boxed sets last night, you can get a decent idea of what the exclusive items might be once revealed tonight.
I’ve included some small images from the comic, and a run down of what we can probably expect.
Steel Brigade Pilot w/ VTOL
No real idea about the pilot himself, but a quick panel from the comic shows the Pursuit of Cobra Ghost Hawk, which is definitely a VTOL aircraft, so that would seem to answer that question. I wonder if it’s color scheme will be based off the Steel Brigade Sky Hawk from 2005?
Cobra Septic Tank MK II
Images from the comic show a DTC HISS! That is a pretty pleasant surprise, I suspect. We haven’t seen this vehicle since it was used in the DTC line, and it was a surprise to me to see that the Club may have used it for this convention set.
G.I. Joe Rescue Ops 2 Pack
Near the end of the comic, Clutch and an unnamed driver of an ECO Warrior themed Ninja Combat Cruiser appear! We see no mention of the Combat Cruiser itself, but we do see Clutch and a small hint of a driver, who almost looks to be wearing a knit cap? Perhaps these are the two “Rescue Ops” members?
Steel Brigade Zombie 3-Pack
I think it’s safe to assume these are based off the concept case figures, and they are shown throughout the comic as well.
Now, neither the Kre-O set nor Night Force Crazylegs were shown in the comic (unless that’s Crazylegs driving the jeep with Clutch, considering the PoC version had that knit cap underneath his helmet) but I think we can all assume what we’re getting there.
It’s still unknown to me whether or not Crazylegs is indeed the “Parachute” figure. It certainly seems likely, but the Club did not explicitly state that in the program. They did mention that he’s a “Paratrooper” so that really seems to lead that direction, though. Something tells me ole Crazylegs might be the sleeper hit this year. Get it while it’s hot! Issue #14 marks the grand finale of IDW’s G.I. Joe: Special Missions title, which was a rocky replacement for the Snake Eyes solo book that never really seemed to catch on with Joe fans or other readers.
The last issue is hitting comic shops tomorrow, so grab it while you can, and then wait for “The Fall of G.I. Joe” which should be coming later this year.
G.I. Joe: Special Missions #14
Chuck Dixon (w) • Will Rosado (a) • Rosado, Paul Gulacy (c)
G.I. JOE—AMBUSHED! When the SPECIAL MISSIONS convoy faces a surprise attack from COBRA troopers and a dangerous sniper, it’s up to LOW LIGHT—G.I. JOE’s own long-range specialist—to turn the tables and get the team out in one piece!
Join the SPECIAL MISSIONS team for one last covert mission!
FC • 32 pages • $3.99
Bullet points:
- The end of SPECIAL MISSIONS!
- Variant Cover by S L Gallant!

As a collective, Marvel G.I. Joe fans have been hotly anticipating this huge release for quite a while now, and finally that day has arrived! Larry Hama and SL Gallant have teamed up to bring G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #200 to Joe fans everywhere, and it also marks Gallant as the longest running artist in the book’s history! That seems unbelievable, but it’s true.
Personally, I couldn’t be happier. Gallant has a great artistic style, and is able to infuse character and dramatic action, while also being very faithful in the representation of realistic elements like weapons and vehicles. It’s a critical mixture of skills that not many artists can capture. Gallant does it perfectly. I couldn’t be more pleased that he now has this landmark to his name, and I am greatly looking forward to his continuing run on this great book.
