Anyone who has checked out my site has seen updates from those awesome Philippine Joefans from ToySoldier118. But no matter how cool their work has been to this point, I don’t think anything has quite reached this level. While they’ve certainly done some awesome interior Dioramas, they are now branching outside…and not in a small way. They have created one of the largest scale G.I. Joe and 1:18 dioramas I’ve ever seen.
They are still gathering together images of the event, but have generously provided YouTube links showing some different angles of this ambitious project that just has to be seen to be believed. It really is awesome.
As always, you can check out their great website right here, and now view these videos below. Once I get the images I’ll show them off, too. Click the “Read the Rest of this Entry” link below for the great details of this diorama, as well as embedded YouTube videos.
OPERATION: SUPERSIZED DMD
Some quick notes..
Ø This diorama is TS118’s very first outdoor project, and is it’s LARGEST to date.
Ø The on-ground tour was made possible by strapping a Nokia handset on video-capture mode on top of a remote-controlled Abrams.
Ø Inspired by the movies Black Hawk Down, The Green Zone, & Transformers the movie (opening sequence, arrival of Decepticon Blackout).
Ø Brought to you by the same team that came up with O:Shock and Awe, O:Killzone, O: Forced Entry, O: Gothic Serpent, O: Sidewinder Verde, O: Grayia Seize-r and O: Snake Rising…the Philippines only local 3 3/4 (1:18) Joe online community.. TS118
Ø Took only 3 weekends of preparation.
Ø Collaboration done by at least 20 members (builders, pledgers/financiers, consultants, toy photographers, etc.
Ø Almost 80 vehicles on ground, with playsets and figures.
thank you for posting this!!
yea, thanks Hawk. Would love to see that unit raid some terror dromes.
I’m underwhelmed. How is this a diorama? Just looks like a bunch of toys lined up neatly in a parking lot.
^agreed. It’s an impressive lineup of a massive collection of 1:18 Joe, BBI, Ultimate Soldier and even a few HTF pieces, and I am envious of anyone with time, money and room to catalog such a sizeable fleet.
However, other than some striped tape for an airstrip and the occasional command tent, I don’t get the vibe of a massive “diorama” as much as just a huge display with boasting rights.
I’ve seen their other work with hand-made constructs and I can appreciate the imagination behind those to-scale environments alot more. In any event, Yo Joe!
Thank you Justin for the site feature. Sincerely appreciate the support and the online exposure. 🙂
Masters Josh and Widgit,
We definitely appreciate your inputs. Other than this being entirely modular and easy to “line up neatly in a parking lot”, there are other aspects that a video cannot actually capture. With that, we will be sharing a public photobucket album to showcase the different sub-scenes that were incorporated within the whole DMD. Hopefully, it will be up soon. Rest assured that we will be sharing it with GeneralsJoes. 🙂
BTW, we like how “stormthecastle.com” best described a diorama:
“This definition of a diorama is pretty broad and covers a lot of ground but that is the nature of a diorama. It can be almost anything as long as it captures a moment in time and displays some type of scene with multiple objects. This display of multiple objects and how they interact is the second most important aspect of a diorama because it shows us a scene.”
So what did we attempt to display? Quite simply, a desert military installation early in the morning, just as the troops are about to get ready for another day.
We don’t necessarily have to execute a ton of new structures (read: dio-pieces) to showcase a diorama. We opted to use playsets (given that the park management wouldn’t allow us any construction on-site), and displayed a motorpool, a helo bay, and an airstrip among others.
It doesn’t have to be intricate nor expensive to execute a group diorama in 1:18 scale. Sometimes, all it takes is a litte imagination, a bunch of guys having fun, and some little plastic men & vehicles. 🙂
From TS118, HOO-AH!
And a Merry Christmas to all!!
Excellent explanation, Flash. Give a hearty “congrats” to all of the TS118 guys, it looks great!
