So yes, I realize I’ve paid a lot of attention to G.I. Joe: Renegades, and even if that series is not airing within the next month or so, there is still something for Joe fans to celebrate. Beginning tonight at 12:30 midnight (Eastern Time), G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, the Sunbow series that put the name on the map, will begin airing on The Hub. It will be proceeded at 12:00 by the original Transformers. While the time of the airing precludes a new generation of Joe fans from watching (without the services of a DVR, anyway) I think it’s awesome that this series will once again be appearing on television.
To celebrate this great occasion, I wanted to reprint an article I wrote a long time ago…since The Mass Device 5-Parter begins tonight, let me (re) present the Top Five Memorable Moments from the MASS Device mini-series. Check ’em out after the jump, and tune into The Hub tonight to relive your youth! Be sure to check out the Hub’s Television Schedule to see when other great nostalgia-rich shows are airing.
Top Five Memorable Moments – G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero 5-Part Mini-Series
__________
5: Destro escapes as the Joes overrun the COBRA Temple, and then the Joes have to right COBRA’s wrongs using their own MASS Device. But things don’t go exactly according to plan…
4: The COBRA Temple situated in a remote mountain valley, and an evil visitor is on his way…
———
3: Traveling to the arctic wilderness, the Joes are after the radioactive element needed for their own MASS Device, but they are ambushed in a cave and trapped until one of them makes the ultimate sacrifice.
———-
2: Our first real introduction to a few key members of the G.I. Joe team, when they are put to the test of infiltrating a military installation. They are far more successful than the top brass expected!
———-
1: Love him or hate him, Duke has become the epitimy of “G.I. Joe”. The chisel-jawed blonde-haired hero, to cartoon fans Duke is the man. And when I was 10 years old, Duke was the man. This was our first indication of what to expect from the Joe field leader…he had the girl, and he was a man of action!
Those 5 scenes really exemplified what G.I. Joe was to me when I was 10 years old. It wasn’t the most realistic, and it was often over-the-top, but combine great characters with great action, and this little kid was satisfied.
If you love the MASS Device, you just have to check out the boxed Battle Pack if you haven’t already. I’ll be putting a post up later today breaking down all of the figures in the pack (which can be seen on YoJoe.com).
I guess you dont get Teletoon Retro down there. Up here in Canada I’ve been watching the original for a few months now. And they are preceeded by the originl Transformers series.
I just found out my satellite package doesnt carry the Hub. (grumble)
Fortunately i have every episode of Transformers on DVD and VHS and 80% of GIJoe on DVD.
Now let’s see if I have to check out Renegades online or if I have to pay more money to my (censored) provider for one channel
DVRed the the first episode last night and watched it this morning. Hopefully they show the entire run in order, that would be my first time watching it since the early 90s.
And love that they kept the “We’ll return after these messages.” Ah nostalgia. 🙂
My absolute favorite moment of MASS was when Destro risked DESTROYING THE EARTH so that he could escape. You can tell some of the characters weren’t solidified yet, as that’s approximately four gazillion times more ruthless than “noble Destro” ever was.
