As NYCC chugs along, IDW Publishing has sent out a world-altering press release featuring the return of fan favorite Snake Eyes to the IDW G.I. Joe universe… but this isn’t the Snake Eyes we know and love. This Snake Eyes is an Agent of Cobra!
Now, I know what you’re thinking… and I was thinking the same thing. This is a gimmick, right? After all, Snake Eyes has pulled this trick before, in the events leading up to his “death”.
But, then I saw who was writing this mini-series.
Mike Costa.
Yes, Mike Costa is making is triumphant return to the IDW G.I. Joe universe, and I am officially on board. His work on the Cobra series throughout it’s multi-year run was some of the finest G.I. Joe themed storytelling I’ve read, and if he’s doing this Snake Eyes: Agent of Cobra title, I have the utmost confidence in what he’s got going on.

Allegiances Are Questioned In New Miniseries
San Diego, CA (October 9, 2014) – The fan-favorite G.I. JOE ninja is set to strike out on his own in an all-new series, G.I. JOE: Snake Eyes: Agent of COBRA! Debuting in January of 2015, this series builds upon the acclaimed new G.I. JOE series, released last month. With an exciting creative team and a secretive mission, the stakes have never been higher!
Snake Eyes’ shocking return to the world of G.I. JOE will see the long-time hero taking on a new role as a member of COBRA! Breaking DESTRO out of prison is just his first stop on this game-changing mission that will pit Snake Eyes directly against the G.I. JOE team led by Scarlett.
“Snake Eyes has been gone from the pages of IDW’s G.I. JOE books for almost two years, so his return alone would make for an incredible story,” says series editor Carlos Guzman. “But Mike’s idea to have him return on the side of Cobra begs so many exciting questions: What could cause Snake Eyes to join the enemy? How could Cobra convince G.I. JOE’s most dangerous warrior to betray his unit? What will G.I. JOE do when they find out the ninja commando has returned… but is now an agent for the villainous organization? There was no doubt that the answers would make this series one of the best G.I. JOE stories ever told!”
Praised for his work on G.I. JOE: The Cobra Files, Mike Costa returns to the world of G.I. JOE, writing this explosive series. Joined by artist Paolo Villanelli, who will provide covers and interior art, the duo will set Snake Eyes against unexpected new dangers.
“SNAKE EYES: AGENT OF COBRA is, without a doubt, the most exciting and action-packed story I’ve ever written in my six-year history with the G.I. JOE universe,” said Mike Costa. “I wanted to take the dark psychology and intrigue that made G.I. JOE: COBRA so fun to work on, and graft it into the DNA of a big action movie, starring G.I. JOE’s most iconic character. It’s probably my ultimate G.I. JOE story, and it’s really been fun to work on. I’d always tried to approach G.I. JOE: COBRA by asking myself “how could this get worse?” Well, Snake Eyes is working for Cobra. I think I’ve answered that question”

Funny, that’s when I gave up on Joe comics. It was all about Cobra in every title. Joe was barely written, poorly written or just stuck in as cardboard cut outs. I haven’t seen a thing to make me want to pick up Joe comics. From the self-insert Mainframe Gary Stu to Scarlett either screaming or mooning about, the lack of SnakeEyes with little plausible reasons… nope. Still no reason.
Costa’s COBRA comics are amazing. Very excited about this.
Sounds awful. Kinda tired of these comics always putting G.I. Joe as the weak, poorer and dumber side. IDW joes are presented much more like a bunch of boy scouts since its beginning! Always taking the shaft from Cobra, always running, aways getting their sorry asses kicked. This and the pretty generic looking, now you cannot easily separate one joe from another and tell who is who. No classic vehicles bing used as well. Damn, at least we still have Hama’s ARAH, which is the REAL G.I. Joe IMO.
It’s pretty amazing how bad IDW’s take on GI Joe has been for the most part. If your favorite classic character isn’t portrayed as a dick then it’s probably because they got killed off in a meaningless way in their first appearance.
I think Costa’s Cobra worked because it was basically a Chuckles story that wasn’t saddled with any baggage from the other IDW titles. Not going to have that luxury with Snake Eyes.
This is stupid.
