Keep in mind that I am in no way an expert in the ways of Sunbow or a cartoon aficianado. I just know what scenes made an impact with me when I was a kid. Do you agree or disagree?
__________
5: Destro escapes as the Joes overrun the COBRA Temple, and then the Joes have to right COBRA’s wrongs using their own MASS Device. But things don’t go exactly according to plan…
4: The COBRA Temple situated in a remote mountain valley, and an evil visitor is on his way…
———
3: Traveling to the arctic wilderness, the Joes are after the radioactive element needed for their own MASS Device, but they are ambushed in a cave and trapped until one of them makes the ultimate sacrifice.
———-
2: Our first real introduction to a few key members of the G.I. Joe team, when they are put to the test of infiltrating a military installation. They are far more successful than the top brass expected!
———-
1: Love him or hate him, Duke has become the epitimy of “G.I. Joe”. The chisel-jawed blonde-haired hero, to cartoon fans Duke is the man. And when I was 10 years old, Duke was the man. This was our first indication of what to expect from the Joe field leader…he had the girl, and he was a man of action!
Those 5 scenes really exemplified what G.I. Joe was to me when I was 10 years old. It wasn’t the most realistic, and it was often over-the-top, but combine great characters with great action, and this little kid was satisfied.
If you love the MASS Device, you just have to check out the boxed Battle Pack if you haven’t already. I’ll be putting a post up later today breaking down all of the figures in the pack (which can be seen on YoJoe.com).
I agree that for a cartoon in the epic 1980s The MASS Device series was the event of the year for me and others of my age. It was really high adventure, connections, friendships, duty and some serious courage. I’ll never forget biting my nails as Snake Eyes slips into the cavern, perhaps to his death! I literally ran home every day just to catch the next episode of G.I. Joe (this was before it was a daily cartoon). And yes, love it or hate it, Duke was tough as nails and THE Man to lead the fight. I have to say, nothing prepared me for Destro’s method of escape and distraction, I mean we all thoght the COBRA Commander was evil!? Awesome memories, and a great place in television history.
Cripes. If these moments are the BEST of this series… I’d hate to see the worst.
Only good clip in there is the Destro/Cobra Commander bit at the temple.
Also, cartoon Duke sucked. For a “man of action” and a “great leader”… he sure got his worthless Aryan ass captured a LOT.
I like the moments where Destro and CC would get into name calling spats.
“You Titanium faced turkey!”
“Egotistical Peacock!”
“Reptillian Popenjay”
And so on. It rivals the arguments between Spock and MCcoy on Star Trek.
