While all of the C.O.P.S. vehicles from series 1 are really geared towards the future architecture and vehicle design of the next century, the Roadster is really a throwback to the old days. Like the Crooks figures themselves, the Roadster seems on the surface to be a leftover from the bygone days of gang war and black and white movies, but again, like many of the figures, there is a pretty neat futuristic element buried inside that makes it more current and more dangerous.
The design is definitely old school based, with the rounded front and headlights perched on top of the engine block, looking like the type of 30's roadster it's named after. Still, the design is sleek and aerodynamic, and with the oversized tires it gives this Crooks vehicle some needed bulk. Exhaust pipes come from the car and lead to some elaborate engine blocks on the outside of the vehicle, insinuating that this thing is capable of some serious speed. There are more exhaust pipes on each side of the single seat cockpit and Turbo TuTone's designation of "getaway driver" make some more sense with this powerhouse at his fingertips. As was the norm back then, though, the good guys seemed to really get the serious gear while the bad guys just kind of got a few bones tossed their way. Seeing the Ironsides go up against this thing would be a short battle to be sure.
That's not to say that the Roadster has no defensive capabilities. The somewhat futuristic quad cannons on the raised turret above the seat provide some nice offensive and defensive firepower, and the platform behind them allows a Crook to take the shots as they wish. The cannon is pretty nicely designed and looks cool, and also looks like it will cause some damage, although probably only in a getaway capacity, not really in an offensive manner. While it looks like it would provide some great cover fire, I can't see it going toe to toe against the likes of the Ironsides or Air Raid.
But still, this thing is more meant as getaway or a robbery style vehicle, as evidenced by the safe mounted on the back of the vehicle, which even opens and reveals several bars of silver inside. I can completely see Turbo TuTone driving this thing as fast as he can, simply to get away from the approaching Ironsides, and I'd bet the maneuverability of it might even overcome the raw firepower of any of the C.O.P.S. vehicles.
The colors are kinda funky with that off green and silver, but it still works, and they're not strange enough to be jarring. I love the flame decals, it really gives that sense of old thyme style, but all of the trimming still makes this vehicle look downright FAST.
All in all, power-wise, it really doesn't hold up to any of the C.O.P.S. stuff, but I'm not sure it was meant to. The old school style is a little off-putting, to be honest, but it fits in with the Crooks and works in some regard. It's a shame, there really aren't any Crooks vehicles that even hold a candle to their C.O.P.S. counterparts, but as Crooks vehicles go, this one is all right. Even as the flagship car of the Crooks stable, it can often be found at pretty reasonable prices. Not a bad vehicle, and Turbo himself is a decent figure as well.
