Spy Troops Wave 5 (Wave 8) - Zartan

Again, I find myself working to try and explain why we get repaints upon repaints in figure assortments these days. I think everyone realizes at this point that they’re going to happen, yet still, it’s a little irritating to have a couple spots in what was an incredible wave wasted by a pair of re-hashed figures. And while I was a little more forgiving in Duke’s case, with the case of Zartan, I find myself less so.

This Zartan mold is just…strange. It’s nice and slim, and somewhat within proportions (although the legs are a little on the long side) but it is at the same time a little dull, and yet still too busy. The uniform is a strange choice indeed, with an odd V-Neck shirt and skin tight pants with little adornment beyond some metallic knee/shin pads. Yet, with that simplicity so prevalent through most of the mold, Hasbro for some reason finds it necessary to cover his arms in this bizarre, extravagant metallic substance that defies all human logic or reason. As a matter of fact, I think if they left his arms alone…left them more plain, I would probably like the whole figure more. But, as it is, I can’t take my eyes of those strange appendages and it pulls down the nice factor of the rest of the figure while it’s at it.

Yet still…this is an improvement, believe it or not. Up until this point, you could only get Zartan with bright red pants or lime green arms as strange as that sounds. At least with this figure he is decked out in his more natural, normal colors and actually looks like Zartan should (minus the robo-arms). Still, an improvement over an odd figure is still…an odd figure. And Zartan is definitely odd, color alterations or not.
One bright point of this figure, though, are his accessories. I am happy to report that he comes with different weapons than the previous versions, especially because the weapons from the previous versions were something akin to plastic garbage. Now he has a black version of Burnout’s shotgun (yeah!!!) a pretty neat little duffel bag, and something that Zartan fans have been waiting for…new masks! Unfortunately, the new masks don’t fit all that hot, and they make him look like a Flint and Duke Bobblehead, but I think its cool that they’re there, and if I were a kid, I’d be all over ‘em. In defense of Zartan's masks, they actually fit considerably better than Agent Faces' do and I think are really more convincing.

Overall, if you have the previous versions of Zartan, I don’t really see much of a reason to get this one, although he does come with a new sculpt figure. But if you are currently Zartanless and looking for one, might as well grab this one rather than the others. He is definitely more like the Zartan we all know.

A little Zartan LBC that I'm sure will be showing up all over the place...don't love the head/hood combo, though. I may try the old Wave 4 (RAH Collection) head and see what that looks like...
