Spy Troops Wave 2 (Wave 7) - Iron Grenadier
Well, not much to say about this figure that I didn't say in the last review.
Sculpted similarly...well...exactly like the Wave 5 version this Iron Grenadier goes to a lighter and more regal color scheme. Overall, I think it works well, for a repaint.
IG's have always been black and red...that's just their color. Thus, the last one was a perfect update, using the tried and true black and red color scheme, but adding some cool chromish blue touches as well to bring things into the 21st Century. Add that to the very cool bullpup machine gun and you had a terrific update to the venerable Destro trooper.
So why mess with perfection?
Well, I see this guy as an addition to the IG troops. Financing being what it is, I can't really see myself army building this guy, so like many others throughout the internet community, this IG will be Destro's infamous "Sergeant Major"...a head Iron Grenadier, who is basically the go between for Destro and his ground troops.
The coloring really works perfectly for this adaptation, I think. The lgihter gray looks a little more officer-like, and add that to the killer gold trim and this version of the IG definitely looks higher ranked. While some folks may make this guy merely an IG officer, I want to make him even more important...Destro's right hand man. This role has been filled by a custom of mine named Commander Wade lately, but things may get changed around slightly....
All around, this figure is still pretty effective in the scheme it's in now. The gray, red and gold all mesh together very nicely and the overall effect is quite appealing. It doesn't look like a repaint just for repaint's sake, it looks like a figure whose color scheme was carefully thought out and well-executed.
The detail is brought out fantastically in this scheme as well...even better than the original. The rippling muscles and layered body armor really shines through in this color and the figure comes together very nicely, especially for being a repaint. I still love looking at all the lilttle details of this figure, from the COBRA knee emblems to the very cool belt buckle...the straps and gold ribbing are all used to perfection. Like the Wave 5 version, this figure is a little stiff and less poseable than some of the other Wave 7 figures, but he is still very cool and worth bringing into your COBRA forces.
If you're like me, you won't be going crazy with building this trooper, but he's definitely worth a purchase, or maybe even a couple depending on your attitude.
