Code Name: Flint Flint's life seemed to be a priviledged one. Born to wealthy parents and a highly intelligent and motivated individual, he made the best of all opportunities, eventually ending up as a Warrant Officer on the G.I. Joe team. Highly confident and a very intelligent tactical planner, Flint felt right at home with the Joes, even if his slightly muffled arrogance did ruffle some feathers. No feathers were more ruffled than those of Allison Hart-Burnett, code named: Lady Jaye. At first she coyly refused his advances, but before long, they were friends, and then more than friends. They co-existed through their work, forming a bond that only soldiers can form. They were as close as could possibly be. As their time with the Joe team moved along, they grew more and more eager to leave the military life and have a "real" life together. They planned marriage and a long life as the end of the Joe team continued to loom in the immediate future. When the team was officially disbanded, they figured the time was near where they could submit their transfer requests and move on. But there was one mission left to go...COBRA had re-infested COBRA Island and was planning some sort of operation, and the time to strike was now. Every single Joe operative was activated, every vehicle, every ounce of hardware, into one succint, violent assault on COBRA's cabal. It was a powerful and intense battle. Near the end of the fight Flint and Lady Jaye led an insert team deep into the bowels of the island, and found a cavernous maze of chambers, evidently serving as escape tunnels. They surprised Destro and the Baroness, who fled. Most of the insert team scattered to overtake other COBRA agents, so Flint and Lady Jaye took pursuit. In desperation, Destro threw his arm back and launched a wrist rocket, hoping to send his much-respected foes running for cover, and giving them a chance to escape. But his aim was off...he sucked in a breath as he saw the small red rocket rip right towards Flint...Destro hadn't intended to kill either of them, he just wanted a chance to escape...and start his life without COBRA in his pocket. Flint, as a longtime soldier, let instinct take over. He didn't think, didn't consider the consequences...he just moved. The rocket tore by, and as he spun to warn his would-be wife, he saw her eyes grow wide and the rocket struck the wall, eight inches from her. She died instantly. It is a sight that was permenantly carved into Flint's psyche, creating irreparable harm. He would simply never be the same again. His life spiralled sharply downward as he left the military and started drowning his sorrows. His parents had passed away, and he was broken, beaten, and alone, with Duke as one of this only friends. Several years passed...the Joe team was being reinstated and good men were needed. Against many peoples' better judgement, Duke made a visit (see my fanfic, The Price of Peace, Chapter Four) to Flint, but was meant with angry disdain. Flint did end up relenting, and actually infiltrated COBRA Island on his own, and ended up helping the team in the end, though he got a bullet in his back from The Baroness for his trouble (also seen in The Price of Peace). Stuck in a hospital bed, Flint had little to look forward to, and few reasons to heal. He simply wanted to fade away. As his recovery progressed, he felt stronger and stronger, sometimes against his wishes, and was contacted secretly by the International Task Force, Steel Brigade. His time in the field had given him a good reputation, and they knew of his current issues with the United States government, and wanted to help. Flint reluctantly agreed, desperately looking for some purpose in his life, and the Steel Brigade paid him a nighttime visit...to the outside world, he simply disappeared. Things went fairly well with the Steel Brigade team...Flint had a purpose again and was getting back into the groove. Back in the field, back planning ops, Flint was getting comfortable again. He heard of the attack on Joe HQ in the Pentagon, and heard directly from General Hawk a month or two later. Hawk had made the call...he was reforming the Renegades, and the Steel Brigade Commander had agreed to let Flint work with them, if he wanted. It was a very tough decision for the Warrant Officer...there were a lot of conflicting memories from his time there. But ultimately he figured the best way to battle his demons would be to face them head on. He joined Hawk's side once again, and The Renegades welcomed him with open arms. He and Duke still have their clashes from time to time...their relationship is more strained than it ever has been. But when push comes to shove, each of them know the other has his back and would take a bullet for him, and they know they're there to do their jobs and do them well. |
