I'm not at all ashamed to admit I just plain do not know what to think of Hyena. It seems obvious to me that he was designed as some sort of precursor to the third series "Prankster" figures, but since that never got off the ground, he looks somewhat out of place. He's still not a bad figure by any means, I'm just not real sure how he fits. He seems like Empire City's version of the Joker in a manner of speaking, using deadly pranks as methods of destruction, and his over the top personality kind of fits in with the other Crooks...still, his look is pretty different. Appealing all the same, but still different.
His head sculpt is quite pleasently unique, with a bald top and nicely designed beard underneath. He looks gruff and mean, which is ironic considering the overly happy face helmet/mask that clips over him. It's a cool ironic, though, and what's more twisted than an evil clown, right? His body is slim and streamlined, and very movable, another aspect that I really like. He's wearing almost a bodysuit type of thing, which doesn't have much in the way of trim or adornments, but the figure works that way, and I like it a lot. The pattern on his torso does at least bring something different to the table and helps him stand out somewhat. His hands are wrapped in a kind of strange bandage material, which also is interesting and different, and the way the cape material is attached to the torso makes for an interesting element that thankfully does not hinder poseability too much.
The colors involved with the figure are yet another Joker throwback it would seem, being mostly purple and pink based, which works for the character, I think, in an almost circus environment. There aren't many different colors, but the colors that are used are used effectively, and I like how they look. The silver on the cape-type apparatus is a vast difference against the rest of the figure, and I think it looks very cool as well.
His accessories once again border on the bizarre...bizarre, but cool. Along with the attached cape, he has the aforementioned helmet/facemask with long blonde hair, a scary looking grin and purple helmet. This gives the character an almost entirely different appearence, and I dig it. He also has a very strange battering ram type of weapon that clips to his arm and pops out an almost spiked prong...it's strange, but potentially disturbing.
The coolest gear, though, has to be the strap that winds around his torso and waist with some very effective holsters for the knife and pistol that he also comes with. All of this stuff is surprisingly understated (compared to an oversized, bright pink battering ram, anyway), but is some of my favorite stuff that he comes with. He also comes with a small sheet of smiley face stickers that are almost disturbing in and of themselves.
All throughout series 1, the Crooks definitely looked like bad guys...common criminals, street thugs, and paid lackies...but Hyena...Hyena just seems downright evil...almost "serial killer" evil, and it's a pretty cool element to add to the character. He seems like some sort of twisted weirdo that even scares the heck out of his fellow Crooks, all from behind the broad, emotionless smile of a clown.
An interesting character, and a decent enough figure...can also usually be found pretty cheap. Not a critical componant of the C.O.P.S. and Crooks mythos, but someone to keep your eye on, anyway.
