I'm honestly not sure if it's purposeful or not, but Hardtop and Bullseye seem to fit really well together. Similar body styles, similar uniform designs and color pallets used...they compliment each other perfectly as series one vehicle drivers and I really like Hardtop as much if not more than Bullseye, which is definitely saying something.
Originally designed as Longarm's "sidekick" so to speak, and the rookie of the force, Hardtop quickly grew on me as a kid, mostly because of his pseudo-focus in the early issues of the comic. He was a pretty central character in those first couple of issues and did some cool things with his Ironsides Armored Attack Vehicle that really made me like him and his car. In fact, I clearly remember setting aside allowance money as I got it, just for the Ironsides that I was planning on getting on my weekly bike trip to the local department store. This figure, like Bullseye, is one of the few first series figures that is a lot more futuristic based than classically styled, and I think it comes across well. The full bodysuit with light armored tunic is sculpted nicely and fits the figure, giving him a great modern edge. The silver on his shoulders really shines bright amongst the black uniform and looks really sharp.
The ever-present badge is right where it should be, and along with this black and silver is a nice, rich blue that brings out some cool detail in his helmet, facemask, and other trimming. The facemask design is very nice as well. It looks to be a pretty solid piece that would be tough to see out of, but the grooves in it (to somewhat match the grooves in Ironsides itself) look cool and seem fitting.
Like Bullseye, Hardtop is slim and easily movable, and he quickly became one of my favorite figures to use as a kid. The coloring compliments the sculpting, and his simple accessory assortment (the aforementioned facemask and forearm-clip shield/machine gun) are basic, but effective. All in all, even as Longarm's "sidekick" he essentially outshines him as a toy in almost every category.
The Ironsides is one of the most popular of the C.O.P.S. vehicles, and could be tough to track down. When they do show up, they can sometimes fetch a premium, especially MIB. However, loose samples are pretty inexpensive, and there aren't a TON of parts to get lost. Loose Hardtop figures are out there as well, and shouldn't be too pricey if you can find them. If you do track him down, I definitely recommend that you pick him up...definitely a great figure to add to the collection.
