Buttons McBoomBoom is quite simply, I believe, one of the most recognizable Crooks that got produced back in the day. Everyone seems to remember "the guy with the guns in his chest" and for good reason...Buttons is a very memorable figure and a very memorable character...he was far and away my favorite character on either side of the law back when I was younger.
Designed with a painfully obvious tribute to your classic era gangsters, this zuit-suited criminal came fully decked out in his hat, spats, shoulder pads, and neatly pressed suit. He looked pulled straight from the 30's cinema, all the way down to his violin case that he toted around. But when things got messy, the similarities to your classic gangsters ended in a blast...his chest opened up and twin machine guns swung out, ready to deal out some punishment. Buttons was a hitman, after all, and taking out people was his specialty.
Buttons McBoomBoom was one of the few characters who I thought got his due in the cartoons and the comics...each one made him out to be a nearly unstoppable killing machine who always got his man. In my personal universe it was the same way. When McBoomBoom was on the job, you just didn't escape.
I don't know what I found so appealing about him, quite honestly. My biggest draw back then was the pseudo-science fiction elements to a lot of the figures, but from head to toe, Buttons McBoomBoom was straight out of the past. His nicely sculpted grim visage was mean and uncaring, which automatically gave him some serious personality. His suit was perfectly sculpted, although not all that exciting, and the pinkish color wasn't all that tough and manly either. Still, just the look on his face was enough to give this guy his edge, and in spite of his ancient look and odd color scheme, he had attitude.
That attitude especially shone through once you unclipped his well-concealed chest plate and flipped out the twin machine guns that were stored inside. This feature was used in the G.I. Joe line as well as C.O.P.S., and I have to say it was quite a bit more successful here, simply because of the larger scale. Not only are the weapons nicely detailed, but the internal chest compartment is well sculpted, too, and the door opens easily for quick access. Stuff like this is what I love about this toyline, especially with figures like this one and Bullet-Proof...they look so normal and so typical on the outside, but they have these awesome futuristic cybernetic componants hidden away that make the characters completely unique and add a new dimension to "play time". The execution of these features on both Bullet-Proof and Buttons McBoomBoom is exceptional.
As I've already mentioned, the colors themselves are nothing to write home about, yet they still work and I'm not quite as bothered by them as one might think you would be with a hitman dressed in a pink zoot suit. The pinkish color looks like an authentic shade for the character and is nicely complimented by the dark lines running down the jacket and pants. The black gloves and boots stand out nicely against the brighter colors and overall, even in this shade, he looks dangerous and respectable.
His accessories are another perfect compliment. He doesn't need much, and what he comes with is pretty much perfect. He has his classic gangster brimmed hat, which is removable, of course, and a simple violin case with futuristic tommy gun tucked neatly inside. All of this stuff works with the character nicely and is stuff that I could see him using. He doesn't need any more, or any less...it all just works.
As I said, Buttons is far and away one of my favorite characters in the C.O.P.S. mythos, and this figure is a perfect rendition of him. I can't find much to complain about, and I heartily recommend a purchase.
